Although academically trained as a neuroscientist (PhD), my interests in ceramic art grew from 1994-present after taking numerous pottery classes & engaging in extensive studio time in Maryland, New York & Virginia. My interest in ceramics explores possibilities & focuses on the nexus where science meets art. Creating elegant 3-dimensional forms from raw clay is a process that utilizes left and right brain functions, adding balance and stimulating creativity in whatever I do. I relish the challenges that working with clay provide—taking cream-cheese-like raw porcelain & using engineering concepts to create structural forms that can survive the risks associated with multiple kiln firings—ultimately contributing to the lasting beauty that Ceramic Art adds to our world. More recently, jewelry design has captured my attention-focusing on gemstone designer jewelry --where Nature's Beauty Shines!

From small functional pottery pieces to large ceramic art installations -tiles, bird houses, platters, wall pieces & the list goes on.
As a ceramic handbuilder, Diane has transitioned over time from functional pottery to sculpture & larger structural forms. She has focused on the richness that mixed-media techniques have to offer, then moved to smaller scale projects such as textural tiles that are embellished with copper, silver, bone, Swarovski elements, found jewels & gemstones. This interest naturally led to a second passion -jewelry design- which has now been added to the artistic agenda of the Fire in the Sky Studio.
